Nata nel 2003, la Commissione Roma si rivolge a grandi fotografi internazionali – in passato a Josef Koudelka (2003), Olivo Barbieri (2004), Anders Petersen (2005), Martin Parr (2006), Graciela Iturbide (2007), Gabriele Basilico (2008), Guy Tillim (2009), Tod Papageorge (2010) e Alec Soth (2011) – e chiede loro di ritrarre la città di Roma in totale libertà interpretativa.
Roma e l’unica città al mondo ad avere affidato per dieci anni consecutivi un suo “ritratto” al gotha della fotografia internazionale. Oltre ai fotografi che hanno lavorato alla ‘Commissione Roma’, il progetto ha visto coinvolti molti altri autori: David Farrell, Leonie Purchas, Tim Davis, Matthew Montheith, David Spero, Pieter Hugo, Juan Fabuel, Agnes Geoffray, Miguel Rio Branco.
Tutti i progetti sono curati da Marco Delogu, che ha recentemente assegnato l’edizione 2012 della Commissione Roma a Paolo Ventura.
Paolo Ventura non è solo fotografo ma è anche disegnatore, scenografo e costumista: nei suoi lavori ricostruisce nei minimi dettagli set che raffigurano luoghi imprecisati, terre dove i sogni sembrano diventare visibili, tangibili, quasi reali. Ogni fotografia è una piccola e perfetta messa in scena.
“Quello che io fotografo non esiste, ma cerco di farlo sembrare vero il più possibile, voglio che chi guarda le mie immagini pensi di esserci stato in quel luogo oppure di esserci voluto stare, anche se lo spettatore è cosciente che le mie immagini non esistono nella realtà mi piace pensare che dopo un po’ se ne dimentichi, come quando si guarda un film.” Paolo Ventura

Founded in 2003, the Rome Commission asks every year to selected international photographers to portray the city of Rome in total freedom of interpretation. In the past Josef Koudelka (2003), Olivo Barbieri (2004), Anders Petersen (2005), Martin Parr (2006), Graciela Iturbide (2007), Gabriele Basilico (2008), Guy Tillim (2009), Tod Papageorge (2010) and Alec Soth (2011).
Rome is the only city in the world to have assigned for nine consecutive years its portrait to such elite of international photographers. In addition to the past Rome Commission’s photographers, the project has also involved many other authors as David Farrell, Leonie Purchas, Tim Davis, Matthew Montheith, David Spero, Pieter Hugo, Juan Fabuel, Agnes Geoffray and Miguel Rio Branco.

Paolo Ventura is not only a photographer but is also a painter, set designer and costume designer: in his work reconstructs in detail sets that represent unspecified places, lands where dreams seem to become visible, tangible, almost real. Each photograph is a small and perfect staging.
